Perlmutt is a Lake Malawi mbuna also known as Yellow Bar or Pearl of Tanzania, valued for its pearly sheen and active rock-dwelling behavior. It is a manageable mbuna for African cichlid aquariums with hard water, plenty of rockwork, and similarly assertive tank mates.
Origin and Habitat

Native Region: Higga Reef and Mbamba Bay, Lake Malawi.

Physical Characteristics

Size: Up to about 5 inches.

Coloration: Dimorphic; mature males show the strongest pearly coloration and yellow-bar patterning, while females and juveniles are more subdued.

Body Shape: Compact mbuna body built for active movement through rockwork.
Behavior and Temperament

Temperament: Mildly aggressive.

Social Behavior: Best kept with compatible Lake Malawi mbuna in a rock-structured aquarium with clear territories.
Aquarium Care

Tank Size: A 55 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended.

Breeding

Breeding Notes: Males display around rock territories and females hold eggs and fry in the mouth. Fry should be protected with rock cover or moved to a grow-out setup after release.

Compatible With: Other compatible Lake Malawi mbuna and sturdy African cichlids of similar size and temperament.
