Perlmutt

Labidochromis sp. "Perlmutt"

Perlmutt is a Lake Malawi mbuna also known as Yellow Bar or Pearl of Tanzania, valued for its pearly sheen and active rock-dwelling behavior. It is a manageable mbuna for African cichlid aquariums with hard water, plenty of rockwork, and similarly assertive tank mates.

  • Native Region: Higga Reef and Mbamba Bay, Lake Malawi.
  • Natural Habitat: Deep rocky habitat.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Up to about 5 inches.
  • Coloration: Dimorphic; mature males show the strongest pearly coloration and yellow-bar patterning, while females and juveniles are more subdued.
  • Body Shape: Compact mbuna body built for active movement through rockwork.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: Mildly aggressive.
  • Social Behavior: Best kept with compatible Lake Malawi mbuna in a rock-structured aquarium with clear territories.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A 55 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended.
