Exochochromis Anagenys

Exochochromis anagenys

Exochochromis Anagenys is a larger Lake Malawi predator hap with a streamlined look and active hunting build. It is best for experienced Malawi keepers with a spacious aquarium, strong filtration, and tank mates large enough not to be viewed as prey.

Origin and Habitat

  • Native Region: Lake Malawi.
  • Natural Habitat: Open sandy and intermediate Malawi habitats.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Large predator hap; plan for an adult fish around 10 inches.
  • Coloration: Mature males usually show the strongest display color, while females and juveniles are more subdued.
  • Body Shape: Elongated predator-hap body built for active swimming.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: Mildly aggressive, with predatory instincts toward smaller fish.
  • Social Behavior: Best kept with large Lake Malawi haps and predator haps in a spacious aquarium.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A 125 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended; larger tanks are better for adult predator-hap groups.
  • Water Parameters: 74-84°F, pH 7.4-8.4, hard water.
  • Tank Setup: Provide open swimming room, sand, sturdy rock structure for sight breaks, and strong filtration.

Diet and Feeding

  • Breeding Notes: Like other Lake Malawi haps, females hold eggs and fry in the mouth. Fry should be protected after release if you want better survival.

Tank Mates

  • Compatible With: Large Lake Malawi haps and predator haps with similar size and temperament.
  • Avoid: Small fish, delicate peacocks, and cramped aquariums.
