Albino Cobue Afra

Cynotilapia zebroides "Cobue"

Albino Cobue Afra is a very rare albino expression of the Cobue Afra/Cynotilapia group. It keeps the compact, active rock-dwelling behavior of the species while trading the standard color for a pale albino appearance.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: 4.5-5.5 inches.
  • Coloration: Albino pale coloration; males usually show the strongest pattern and display intensity with maturity.
  • Body Shape: Compact Cynotilapia-type mbuna body.

Origin and Habitat

  • Native Region: Cobue is in central Lake Malawi on the Mozambican side of the lake, close to Jafua Bay, Kanjindo Rocks, and Masimbwe Island.
  • Natural Habitat: Upper rocky habitat, usually free of sediment; some populations also occur in intermediate habitats where large schools hover above sand and rocks.
  • Same-Locality Cichlids: Other cichlids recorded from Cobwe include Aulonocara stuartgranti 'Cobwe', Chindongo socolofi 'Cobwe', Chindongo sp. 'elongatus masimbwe' Cobwe, and Copadichromis melas 'Cobwe'.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: Mildly aggressive.
  • Social Behavior: Best in a mbuna community with rockwork, sight breaks, and compatible fish.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A 55 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended.
  • Water Parameters: 74-84°F, pH 7.4-8.4, hard water.
  • Tank Setup: Use sand, stacked rockwork, caves, grazing surfaces, and strong filtration.

Diet and Feeding

Breeding

  • Breeding Type: Maternal mouthbrooder.
  • Breeding Notes: Males defend territories and females mouthbrood eggs and fry. Albino traits should be kept in a labeled line if breeding.

Tank Mates

  • Compatible With: Other Lake Malawi mbuna and similar-size African cichlids.
  • Avoid: Very aggressive tank mates, delicate community fish, and very small fish.
