Hertae is a rare Protomelas-type Lake Malawi hap with a larger adult profile and strong mature male display potential. It is best suited to larger hap aquariums where it has room to swim, establish rank, and color up without being crowded by rougher fish.

Origin and Habitat

  • Native Region: Lake Malawi; reported from areas including Thumbi West, Likoma, Chizumulu, Nakantenga, and the Maleri region.
  • Natural Habitat: Sediment-rich rocky habitat.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: 8-10 inches.
  • Coloration: Mature males show the best color and contrast; females and juveniles are more muted.
  • Body Shape: Medium-large Protomelas-type hap body.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: Mildly aggressive.
  • Social Behavior: Best with similar-size peacocks and haps in spacious aquariums.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A 75 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended, with larger tanks preferred for adults.
