Spilonotus Tanzania, formerly sold in the hobby as Insignis, is a Lake Malawi hap from the Liuli area with strong adult male display potential. Its larger size and active swimming style make it best for spacious peacock and hap aquariums.

Origin and Habitat

• Native Region: Liuli, Tanzania, Lake Malawi.
• Natural Habitat: Lake Malawi shoreline habitat.

Physical Characteristics

• Size: 8-10 inches.
• Coloration: Mature males develop stronger display color; females and juveniles are more muted.
• Body Shape: Larger, laterally compressed hap body suited for active swimming.

Behavior and Temperament

• Temperament: Mildly aggressive.
• Social Behavior: Best kept with similar-sized haps and robust peacocks in a tank with room for display territories.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: A 75 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended; larger tanks are preferred for adult males.
• Water Parameters: 74-84°F, pH 7.4-8.4, hard water.
• Tank Setup: Provide open swimming room, sand, and rockwork for cover and sight breaks. Use strong filtration and keep water conditions stable.

Diet and Feeding

Breeding
