The Malawi Hawk is a large Lake Malawi hap with a strong predatory profile and impressive adult presence. It belongs in spacious predator-hap aquariums with robust tank mates that can handle its size and activity level.

Origin and Habitat

• Native Region: Lake Malawi-wide distribution.
• Natural Habitat: Sediment-free rocky habitat or rock-sand interface.

Physical Characteristics

• Size: 10-14 inches.
• Coloration: Adults develop stronger display coloration and patterning; juveniles and females are more subdued.
• Body Shape: Large, elongated hap body with a powerful predatory build.

Behavior and Temperament

• Temperament: Mildly aggressive, with predatory instincts toward smaller fish.
• Social Behavior: Best kept with large Lake Malawi haps in a spacious aquarium with stable stocking and plenty of swimming room.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: A 125 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended; bigger is better for adult males.
• Water Parameters: 74-84°F, pH 7.4-8.4, hard water.
• Tank Setup: Provide open swimming space, sturdy rockwork, and strong filtration. Avoid cramped layouts and small tank mates.

Diet and Feeding

• Primary Staple: Feed a quality daily diet such as Ron’s Peacock & Hap Adult Food.
• Juveniles: Growing fish can be fed Ron’s Juvenile Food.
• Fry: Newly released fry should be started on Ron’s Fry Food.
• Feeding Frequency: Feed 1–2 small meals daily and avoid overfeeding.

Breeding

• Breeding Type: Maternal mouthbrooder.
• Breeding Notes: Males court females and may become more territorial during breeding. Females hold eggs and fry in the mouth, and fry should be protected after release.

Tank Mates

• Compatible With: Large Lake Malawi haps and robust predator-hap communities.
• Avoid: Small fish, delicate species, and overly aggressive tank mates that may cause injury.
