Red Tail Sheller is a very rare Victorian haplochromine with a compact adult size, dimorphic color, and active cichlid behavior. It is best for keepers who enjoy less common Lake Victoria-type cichlids and can provide hard water with rock structure.

Origin and Habitat

  • Native Region: Lake Victoria basin form in the aquarium trade.
  • Natural Habitat: Rocky and shell-associated shoreline habitat in hard-water African lake environments.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Up to about 5 inches.
  • Coloration: Dimorphic; males develop stronger display color and red-tail accents, while females and juveniles are more subdued.
  • Body Shape: Compact haplochromine body with an active swimming profile.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: Mildly aggressive.
  • Social Behavior: Best with similar-size Victorian cichlids or moderately assertive African cichlids.
