Calico Bushy Nose Pleco

Ancistrus sp.

Calico Bushy Nose Plecos are bristlenose plecos with broken, marbled patterning that gives each fish a slightly different look. They are peaceful, manageable algae grazers for community tanks with cover, wood, and stable water.

  • Natural Habitat: Wild Ancistrus occur in tropical freshwater habitats with wood, rock, shelter, algae, and biofilm.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Usually 4-5 inches.
  • Coloration: Calico marbling in tan, orange, brown, and darker patches; males develop larger bristles as they mature.
  • Body Shape: Short armored pleco body with a wide head, sucker mouth, and flattened profile.

  • Social Behavior: Can be kept singly, in pairs, or in groups where caves and grazing space are abundant.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A 20 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended.
  • Water Parameters: 72-82°F, pH 6.5-8.0; stable freshwater with good filtration.
