Nova Blue Longnose

Otopharynx sp. "Nova Blue Longnose"

Nova Blue Longnose is a rare Lake Malawi hap with an elongated head profile and attractive mature male blue color. It is a good fit for hobbyists building a less-common peacock and hap display where unusual body shape matters as much as color.

Origin and Habitat

  • Native Region: Lake Malawi hap in the aquarium trade.
  • Natural Habitat: Intermediate Malawi-style habitat with access to open water and rocky cover.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: 8-9 inches.
  • Coloration: Mature males develop the strongest blue color; females and juveniles are more subdued.
  • Body Shape: Longnose hap body with a streamlined, laterally compressed profile.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: Mildly aggressive.
  • Social Behavior: Best with similar-size peacocks and haps that are active but not overly rough.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A 75 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended.
  • Water Parameters: 74-84°F, pH 7.4-8.4, hard water.
  • Tank Setup: Provide sand, open swimming space, rockwork for cover and sight breaks, and strong filtration.

Diet and Feeding

  • Breeding Type: Maternal mouthbrooder.
  • Breeding Notes: Males display to females and may claim preferred areas. Females mouthbrood eggs and fry, and fry should be protected after release.

Tank Mates

  • Compatible With: Lake Malawi peacocks and haps of similar size and temperament.
  • Avoid: Small fish, very aggressive mbuna, and cramped tanks without open swimming room.
