Malawi Trout

Champsochromis caeruleus

Malawi Trout is a large Lake Malawi predator hap with a powerful, streamlined body and a commanding adult presence. These fish are captive bred and raised by Ron's Cichlids, and sale males may not show much color right away even when vented as males.

Origin and Habitat

  • Native Region: Lake Malawi-wide distribution.
  • Natural Habitat: Shallow vegetated habitats and the intermediate zone.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: 12-16 inches.
  • Coloration: Dimorphic; mature males develop stronger color, while young or newly moved males may show little color at first.
  • Body Shape: Large, elongated predator-hap body built for open swimming.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: Mildly aggressive, with aggressive conspecific behavior as adults.
  • Social Behavior: Best kept with large Lake Malawi haps and predator haps in a spacious aquarium.
