Zebra Long Pelvic Mdoka

Metriaclima sp. "Zebra Long Pelvic Mdoka"

Zebra Long Pelvic Mdoka is a rare Lake Malawi mbuna selected for long pelvic fins and a striking dominant male look. The pale white to light-blue display can shift with comfort and dominance, so mature males usually look their best once settled.

Origin and Habitat

  • Native Region: Lake Malawi, Mdoka/Chilumba-area form in the aquarium trade.
  • Natural Habitat: Rocky shoreline habitat with caves, ledges, and grazing surfaces.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Up to about 6 inches.
  • Coloration: Dominant males can show white to light-blue color that fades in and out with rank; females and subdominant fish are more subdued.
  • Body Shape: Robust mbuna body with extended pelvic fin expression.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: Mildly aggressive.
  • Social Behavior: Best with mbuna of similar size in a rock-heavy aquarium with room for territories.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A 55 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended.
  • Water Parameters: 74-84°F, pH 7.4-8.4, hard water.
  • Tank Setup: Use sand, rock piles, caves, broken sightlines, and strong filtration.

Diet and Feeding

Breeding

  • Breeding Type: Maternal mouthbrooder.
  • Breeding Notes: Males display near rocky territories. Females mouthbrood eggs and fry, and fry should be protected after release.

Tank Mates

  • Compatible With: Other Lake Malawi mbuna and robust African cichlids that do not closely match the male pattern.
  • Avoid: Cramped tanks, overly similar males, and delicate community fish.
