Red Top Lithobates is a Lake Malawi hap known for bold mature male contrast and a bright dorsal highlight. It has enough presence for a show tank but remains more manageable than many large predator haps when kept with similar-size peacocks and haps.

Origin and Habitat

  • Native Region: Lake Malawi.
  • Natural Habitat: Intermediate zones where rock and sand meet.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Up to about 7 inches.
  • Coloration: Mature males develop stronger dark body contrast with red to orange dorsal color; females and juveniles are more subdued.
  • Body Shape: Medium hap body with a laterally compressed profile.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: Mildly aggressive.
  • Social Behavior: Best with similar-size peacocks and haps.
