Platinum OB Compressiceps

Dimidiochromis compressiceps

Platinum OB Compressiceps is an aquarium-created OB/platinum form of the Malawi Eye Biter, keeping the tall, narrow predator profile of Dimidiochromis compressiceps with a brighter, patterned look. It needs space, open swimming room, and tank mates chosen with adult size in mind.

Origin and Habitat

  • Native Region: Aquarium-created OB/platinum strain from Lake Malawi Dimidiochromis compressiceps stock.
  • Natural Habitat: Wild compressiceps use Lake Malawi vegetated and open/intermediate areas where their narrow body helps them ambush prey.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: 8-11 inches.
  • Coloration: Platinum OB patterning with variable blotching; mature males usually show the strongest color and presence.
  • Body Shape: Tall, laterally compressed predatory hap body with a long head and large mouth.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: Mildly aggressive and predatory.
  • Social Behavior: Best with larger Malawi haps and robust peacocks that cannot be swallowed.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A 125 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended.
  • Water Parameters: 74-84°F, pH 7.4-8.4, hard water.
  • Tank Setup: Provide long open swimming lanes, sand, some stable cover, and strong filtration.

Diet and Feeding

Breeding

  • Breeding Type: Maternal mouthbrooder.
  • Breeding Notes: Males display over territories and females mouthbrood eggs and fry. Fry should be protected after release.

Tank Mates

  • Compatible With: Large Lake Malawi haps and robust peacocks.
  • Avoid: Small fish, timid tank mates, aggressive mbuna, and cramped aquariums.
