Cynotilapia Aurifrons Luwino Reef is a rare Lake Malawi mbuna with the compact, active rockwork behavior that makes Cynotilapia a strong choice for structured African cichlid aquariums. Mature males can show bold barring and bright facial color, while females and juveniles stay more understated.

Origin and Habitat

Native Region: Luwino Reef is in far northern Lake Malawi on the Malawi-side western shore, close to Katale (Katari) Island, Patrick's Rocks, and Libwi Lituwa.

Natural Habitat: Sediment-rich rocky habitat. Occurs from 10 to 131 ft depth, most commonly between 10 and 82 ft.

Distribution: Northwestern Lake Malawi. Confirmed localities include Ruarwe.

Same-Locality Cichlids: Other cichlids recorded from Luwino Reef include Aristochromis christyi 'Luwino Reef', Chindongo sp. 'elongatus mphanga' Luwino Reef, Labeotropheus fuelleborni 'Luwino Reef', and Maylandia callainos 'Luwino Reef'.
