Taeniolethrinops Furcicauda Nkekete

Taeniolethrinops furcicauda

Taeniolethrinops Furcicauda Nkekete is a rare sand-dwelling Lake Malawi hap that rewards patience. Males take time to mature, but once they reach size they can develop impressive fins and color in a large, lower-stress hap aquarium.

Origin and Habitat

  • Native Region: Lake Malawi-wide distribution; Nkekete form in the aquarium trade.
  • Natural Habitat: Sandy habitat and intermediate areas where fish forage and hunt near the bottom.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: 12 inches or larger when fully grown.
  • Coloration: Young males may show little color; mature males begin developing color and fin extension as they gain size and confidence.
  • Body Shape: Large, elongated sand-dwelling hap body.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament: More passive when young, becoming mildly aggressive as mature males establish dominance.
  • Social Behavior: Best with similar-size or smaller-but-robust Malawi haps that will not bully late-blooming males.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A 180 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended for long-term adult care.
  • Water Parameters: 74-84°F, pH 7.4-8.4, hard water.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a broad sand bed, open swimming room, limited rock structure, and very strong filtration.

Diet and Feeding

Breeding

  • Breeding Type: Maternal mouthbrooder.
  • Breeding Notes: Mature males display over sand and females hold eggs and fry in the mouth. Fry should be protected after release.

Tank Mates

  • Compatible With: Larger Malawi haps and robust peacocks that will not harass developing males.
  • Avoid: Small fish, very aggressive tank mates, and tanks where this species is the smallest fish.
