Euchilus Thick Lips is a distinctive Lake Malawi hap known for its pronounced lips, larger adult size, and unusual look among Malawi cichlids. It is best suited to spacious hap and peacock aquariums with open swimming room and moderately assertive tank mates.

Origin and Habitat

• Native Region: Lake Malawi-wide distribution.
• Natural Habitat: Sandy sections of shallow intermediate habitats.

Physical Characteristics

• Size: 8-10 inches.
• Coloration: Dimorphic; mature males generally show stronger display color, while females and juveniles are more muted.
• Body Shape: Larger hap body with the thick-lipped head shape that gives the fish its common name.

Behavior and Temperament

• Temperament: Mildly aggressive.
• Social Behavior: Best kept with similar-sized Lake Malawi haps and sturdy peacocks in a spacious aquarium.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: A 75 gallon aquarium or larger is recommended; larger tanks are better for adult groups.
• Water Parameters: 78-82°F, pH 7.8-8.6, hard water.
• Tank Setup: Use sand, open swimming areas, some rock structure for cover, and strong filtration.

Diet and Feeding

• Primary Staple: Feed a quality daily diet such as Ron’s Peacock & Hap Adult Food.
• Juveniles: Growing fish can be fed Ron’s Juvenile Food.
• Fry: Newly released fry should be started on Ron’s Fry Food.

Breeding

• Breeding Type: Maternal mouthbrooder.
• Breeding Notes: Males display to females and may defend preferred areas. Females hold eggs and fry in the mouth, and fry should be protected after release.

Tank Mates

• Compatible With: Similar-sized Lake Malawi haps, robust peacocks, and other moderately assertive African cichlids.
• Avoid: Very small fish, delicate species, and highly aggressive cichlids that may dominate the tank.
